The spirit of the voyageurs came to life in a truly memorable way as the KCDSB community gathered for this year’s Festival du Voyageur celebration. Hosted at École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys, the event welcomed families and community members for an evening filled with culture, connection, and winter fun.

From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was alive with energy. The crisp winter air only added to the authenticity of the experience, as attendees embraced the chilly evening bundled in scarves, tuques, and even full voyageur attire. Laughter and music echoed across the grounds, creating a warm and inviting environment despite the cold.

Throughout the evening, students and families immersed themselves in a variety of interactive activities. A highlight for many was the spirited pickup soccer games that broke out in the snow, where kids laughed, slipped, and played with endless enthusiasm. Nearby, the canoe display quickly became a hub of excitement, with students eagerly gathering around, climbing in, and “paddling” together as they imagined life as voyageurs. The canoe even became the centre of friendly competition, as families joined in to push, pull, and test their strength in playful challenges.

The tug-of-war station brought out the competitive spirit in both students and parents alike. Cheers rang out as teams dug their boots into the snow, pulling with all their might in a series of lively and good-natured contests. It was a true showcase of community spirit, with everyone-from the youngest participants to adults-joining in on the fun.

Adding to the cultural experience, guests enjoyed the beloved Cabane à Sucre tradition, indulging in sweet treats that offered a taste of French-Canadian heritage. Hot chocolate flowed freely, keeping hands warm and spirits high as families gathered around the bonfire to relax and connect.

Live music provided the perfect soundtrack to the evening, tying together the celebration of Métis and French-Canadian culture with moments of joy, reflection, and togetherness.

The Festival du Voyageur once again proved to be more than just an event-it was an opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate shared traditions, and create lasting winter memories. From energetic games in the snow to quiet moments by the fire, the evening captured the true spirit of the voyageurs and left attendees already looking forward to next year’s adventure.
